Ms. Annie Webb Obituary

Annie Ruth Webb, 92, affectionately known as "Big Webb" and “MaMa,” was born on October 8, 1933, in Walstonburg, North Carolina, to the late Ada Field Johnson and David Smith. Days before her passing, Annie could be heard rejoicing in the Lord through prayer. On February 26, 2026, surrounded by her loving family, she answered the Master’s call and transitioned from this earthly life of labor to an eternal life of peace, joy, and love.

Annie attended Knox School in Walstonburg, North Carolina. She later moved to Newport News, Virginia, in 1959, where she met the love of her life, James Webb, affectionately known as “Big Webb” and “DaDa.” They were united in marriage on September 20, 1963. Annie and Webb blended their families and lovingly raised three children: Ruth Carolyn Brooks, Anthony Garner, and the late Earl Garner, creating a home filled with love, faith, and guidance.

Annie also lovingly raised her oldest granddaughter, the late Ramona Bullock Hawk (Michael), nurturing her with the same care and devotion she gave her own children. In addition, Annie later raised two of her great-grandchildren, Wayne Bullock (Ashley) and Chell’e Bullock. During the final six years of Annie’s life, Chell’e became her devoted caregiver, returning that same love and compassion—a true testament to the unbreakable bond they shared. In the end, the same hands Annie once used to nurture Chell’e were the hands Chell’e lovingly held as she cared for her.

Annie accepted Christ at an early age. She loved the Lord and was a faithful and devoted member of Antioch Baptist Church in Newport News, Virginia, until her health began to fail. Even as her health declined, Annie never stopped telling everyone how good God had been to her. Her favorite scripture was Psalm 23, and her favorite song was “This Little Light of Mine.” Throughout the years, she served faithfully in several ministries, including the Missionary Ministry, the Usher Ministry, and the Choir. Annie also had a deep love for the Prayer Band, where she faithfully participated and found great joy in praying for others. Her strong faith, servant’s heart, and dedication to the work of the Lord were evident to everyone who knew her.

Annie loved shopping and traveling. She also loved to dance and was always ready to show off her moves at family functions, bringing laughter and joy to those around her. Annie was an excellent cook, and her famous bread pudding and delicious cabbage were favorites that everyone looked forward to at family gatherings. Her warmth, love, and care for those around her made every moment spent with her special and memorable.

Annie would often say, “When I leave this world, the world won’t owe me nothing,” a reflection of the gratitude and contentment with which she lived her life. She leaves to cherish her memory; her daughter, Ruth Carolyn Brooks (Ronald), her son, Anthony Garner; her uncle, Johnnie Fields of Roselle, New Jersey; six grandchildren, Robert Bryant (Michelle), Devon Bryant, Natashi Rascoe, Lakita Bryant, Anthony Bennafield (Alexis), and Jeniqua Johnson; twenty-two great-grandchildren; thirty-six great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great-grandson. She is also survived by her special friend, James Chapman; her devoted neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Boone; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will cherish her memory. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Webb, a sister, Theresa “Speight” Moore, a brother, Kemp Atkinson, a son, Earl Garner and her oldest granddaughter, Ramona Bullock Hawk.

It is the desire of the Webb family that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
