James Wesley Dix Sr., affectionately known as “Jimmy” and “DJ Zoom” was born December 23, 1954 to the late Mable L. Dix and Edward L. Dix Sr. Though the years the Lord loaned him to us were short, they were great and on Monday, July 9, 2012 at 8:00 am James went on to glory.
James was educated in Accomack County Public Schools and graduated from Onancock High in 1973.
After graduating, James decided to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army. Once he completed 17 years of service, the family returned to Virginia and settled in Newport News.
After his family, James had two passions; being a DJ and cooking. As a DJ and lover of music, he took great pride in blowing the dust off an old LP to “teach these young cats” what real music was. When James was in the kitchen, everyone left full and happy! For the last 8 years, James worked as the Head Chef at Hampton University. There his gift provided James the high honor of preparing a meal for President Barack Obama. Upon meeting the President, James said “he’s the type of guy I would play ball with!”
James was introduced to Jesus Christ as a child at Gospel Temple Baptist Church in Keller, VA. Those closest to him, knew that James had great faith in God. A kindhearted man with an exceptional sense of humor, James was not one to argue, but would rather tell a joke than raise his voice. He never met a stranger, and if you let James say so, neither his sons, nor nephews could take him on the basketball court.
He was united in holy matrimony to Marilyn Lewis on March 22, 2002. In addition to his loving wife; left to cherish him in memory are his children James Jr. (Shaneka) of Fort Sill, OK, Lakisha Dix of Newport News, VA Tyvesha Turlington of Exmore, VA, Lashay Sample (Brian) of Newport News, VA, Jasmine Young of Indianapolis, IN, Tiffany Crumpton of Louisville, KY, and Jeremiah Dix of Hampstead, NY.
With his marriage to Marilyn, more children were instantly added to his heart. Loved as his own are Shawntia, Monchelle, Thadtigus, Jolyn, Derrick, Gelisa and Williemae Lewis of Newport News, VA and James always smiled at that faces of his 11 grandchildren.
As number five of ten children, James will never be forgotten by Mary Lou Garrison (Avon), Shirley Collins, Zenna Walker, and Bonita Dix of Accomac, VA and Gail Lewis (John) of Greensboro, NC, Edward Dix Jr. (Diane) of Grand Rapids, MI, Perry Dix of Berlin, MD, Phillip “Craig” Dix of Chesapeake, VA. James was a wonderful uncle to more 30 nieces and nephews and loved his cousins like brothers and sisters. James has two aunts surviving Catherine “Snooks” Nedham (Mel), and Betty Dix (Alonzo) and one great uncle, Charlie Bloxom. Preceding him in death; his older brother William L. Fosque.
